The Chinese Community Association of Hampton Roads sponsors a number of cultural events throughout the community. The goal of these events is not only to provide fellowship among community members, but to provide the people of Hampton Roads with exposure to the Chinese culture.
An annual tradition of CCAHR is to perform the Chinese Lion Dance for restaurants and other businesses around the community. The Chinese Lion Dance is a tradition that goes back thousands of years and serves to ward off the evil spirits and bring about joy, happiness, and prosperity. It is traditionally performed during the Chinese New Year. The CCAHR is in its 28th year of providing this service to the community, and has raised a total of over $110,000 to benefit the Center.
CCAHR also plays an active role in Asian Fest, a yearly festival held in May. This festival celebrates the many Asian cultures, with a different "country" playing host each year. At this event, the various ethnic groups put on performances and booths that showcase their respective cultures.
Other cultural events and services in the area include a Moon Festival in September (in conjunction with Norfolk Fest Events), Tai Chi classes at the Center, Chinese New Year celebrations, Chinese cemetary caretakers, and Chinese translators. Visit the Chinese Community Center and see what the commotion is all about!
The CCAHR Lion Dance Team will be performing throughout the Hampton Roads area to celebrate the new year! On February 10, 2007, the team will be peforming at the Portsmouth Children's Museum at 11:30 am and again at 1:30 pm. The team will also be performing at various venues around the Hampton Roads area on February 16 and 17.
The Chinese Dance Club (CDC) is a separate organization and a fellowship member of the Chinese Community Association of Hampton Roads. CCAHR proudly supports the organization and its mission. Click here to find out more and learn how you can join the dance party!
